Our values
Transparency
There are no secrets here! Our members can freely access information like our finances and our comprehensive pricing structure.
Trust and support
Trust and support are the founding principles of our cooperative. We can only reach our common goals if we trust each other and have each other’s backs.
Value-based action
People and the environment come before profit! We want the community to grow, not our bank account.
Fair prices for everyone
We aim to maintain a relationship with suppliers and producers that is based on trust, honesty and respect. We pay particular attention to production and transportation lines to ensure they are fair, cruelty-free and environmentally-friendly.
Respect and diversity
The more diverse the cooperative, the richer our community, and we respect each other as individuals Everybody is welcome at SuperCoop!
Listening and learning
We can only learn by listening to each other. We are always open to hear your feedback or suggestions.
Creativity and fun
SuperCoop is a place where you can get creative and have fun as part of a community.
The cooperative
SuperCoop is a cooperative. This means that all members are also co-owners and have a say in decisions. To ensure that we can make decisions together as a group, we have agreed on some basic rules. These rules are set out in our bylaws.
Organisational structure
Our cooperative consists of various units with different functions. We, the members, are the heart of SuperCoop. We make up the General Assembly and can form working groups. There is also an Executive Board and an Advisory Board. In the future, we also plan to establish a Supervisory Board.
General Assembly
Once a year, we meet at the General Assembly to make important decisions together. Every member has one vote, regardless of how many shares they own. At the General Assembly, we elect the Executive Board and the Advisory Board. We also vote on other issues, such as whether single parents should be exempt from working shifts.
Executive Board
The Executive Board manages the cooperative and oversees its affairs. It implements the members’ resolutions and represents the co-operative externally.
The Executive Board currently has three members:
Jonathan Brackett, Andreas Karsten, Jessica Schmidt.
Supervisory Board
The Supervisory Board oversees the Executive Board and ensures that it manages the cooperative effectively. It ensures that the interests of the members are taken into account.
The Supervisory Board currently has six members:
Ela Kagel (Chair), Dilara Erdem (Deputy Chair), Christophe Guené, Claus Huth, Johanna Kühner, Klaus Lorenzen
History
Founding
On October 7, 2020, the foundation for SuperCoop was laid: Together with nearly 40 Berliners, we founded our cooperative. In the initial phase, we launched an online store featuring over 200 products. This allowed us to test how future pickup locations could function.
2019 Crowdfunding Campaign
In 2019, we launched our first funding round and raised 17,000 euros via Startnext.
2021 Crowdfunding Campaign
It quickly became clear: SuperCoop is only possible if we have enough members. That’s why we launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2021—and it was a success! By the end, our community already consisted of over 600 members. We also raised around 75,000 euros. This finally allowed us to take out a loan and sign the lease for our store. Yeah!
Store Opening
We accomplished a lot in the summer of 2021: We renovated our retail space, developed our own online platform for member management, and carefully selected our suppliers and producers to work with.
On September 22, 2021, we officially opened the doors to our store! At that time, we were able to offer around 2,000 products in a space of approximately 200 square meters.
Store Expansion
Thanks to another successful funding round, a total of 200,000 euros was raised through member fundraising. This allowed us to expand our store space by 500 square meters in the spring of 2022. This created more room for direct sales, a children’s corner, a processing room, and a diverse selection of products at great prices! The grand opening of the expanded store space, totaling 700 square meters, took place in May 2022.
1,000 Members and Other Milestones
In September 2022, we hit the 1,000-member mark. Yeah! We also won the Green Buddy Award for Social Cohesion in 2023 and were a finalist for the IHK Entrepreneur Award.
2024 Crowdfunding Campaign
In September 2023, we launched another funding round. We needed 180,000 euros to reach break-even. We also need more members so we can operate our cooperative sustainably and fill our shifts. For these reasons, we launched another crowdfunding campaign in 2024.
